Biography

Biography I just wanted to take a minute and introduce myself and tell you more about who I am and what I make. My name is Misty Sprouse and I grew up in a family of crafters, my mother spends all her free time making quilts, and I have aunts that do bead work and needle work. So growing up I would spend my summers hanging out with the family doing crafts. I also was in 4-H for about 10 years where I had learned sewing, cooking, cake decorating and many other things.

I have always had this need to do creative things, which later translated into my attending photography school. I have an AA in Professional Photography from Colorado Mountain College and later went to Collins School of Design in Arizona where I completed my BA in Graphic Design.

One summer a number of years back I decided to take a 3 hour candle making class offered at a community college for fun. After that class I purchased a small round pillar candle mold and started playing around with colors and scents all with the idea to give them to my family for Christmas presents.

I started taking the candles into my work to ask what the other people thought of them. They were all so impressed by how strong the scents were compared to store bought candles that they started saying if I pay you can you make me some candles too? Soon I was taking orders from lots of people for various things such as teacher presents, Christmas gifts, and presents just for themselves.

About 2 years after the candle class I decided to take the melt & pour soap making class offered by the same teacher as the candle class. I had fun pouring shaped soap, but I felt it wasn't enough for me as I was using a pre-made base. So I went in search of a more hands on soap and after reading books I decided cold process soap was what I needed.

I get to mix all kinds of moisture rich oils together with wonderful scents and colors. And best of all I was the one who decided what oils and properties I wanted to use in making the best bar of soap possible.

So where did the name Burnt Mill come from? My grandma actually lives on a cattle ranch on Burnt Mill road in Colorado. I have had some the best times and memories there so I decided to name my company after Burnt Mill Road.
